How to clean a stroller

Most of the job is the fabric, most of the damage is done by the wrong cleaner, and the stored-in-a-garage mold problem has a different answer entirely.

The direct answer

Read your stroller's manual first, then clean in this order: empty and vacuum, remove and wash what is removable, wipe the fabric that is not, degrease and re-lube the wheels, and dry it fully in the open air before folding it away. The order matters because drying is the step everyone cuts short, and a stroller folded while damp is exactly how the mold problem starts.

The one rule with no exceptions: do not use bleach, solvents or harsh detergents on any part of a stroller. The harness webbing in particular must only ever be surface-cleaned with mild soap and water — chemical cleaners can weaken the fibers without changing how they look, and the same rule applies with even more force to car seat harnesses, which is why how to clean a car seat exists as a separate page. Never put a harness in a washing machine.

The full clean, in order

If your fabric is not removable, the whole job is step three done patiently, with more water changes than feel necessary. Work in small sections, keep the cloth damp rather than wet, and resist the urge to soak the panel — padding that gets saturated takes days to dry and is the other common route to mold.

The mold problem, which is a different job

A stroller that has been stored damp — a garage, a shed, a car trunk over a wet winter — is the hardest version of this. Mold is not dirt and does not come off with a wipe; it has grown into the fibers, and the visible staining is the part you can see.

  1. 1.Take it outside before you start. Disturbing mold releases spores. Do not do this in a kitchen or a nursery.
  2. 2.Brush off the dry surface growth first with a stiff brush, outdoors, before adding any water. Wet mold smears into the fabric.
  3. 3.Clean with mild soap and water, not bleach. Bleach damages fabric and webbing and is not needed to lift surface growth from most stroller textiles. Check your manual for anything the maker specifically permits.
  4. 4.Dry it completely in direct airflow, open, for as long as it takes. Sunlight helps; a damp day indoors does not.
  5. 5.Replace the fabric rather than fight it if the growth is extensive or has reached the padding. Many manufacturers sell replacement seat fabrics, and that is both cheaper and more effective than a chemical assault on the original.
  6. 6.Replace the harness, never clean it aggressively. Webbing with mold through it is a part to order, not a part to bleach.

What to look for in a stroller that stays clean

Cleanability is a specification nobody shops for and everybody notices by month four. These are the features that make a difference.

  • A removable, machine-washable seat cover. The single biggest factor. Check this before buying, not after a blowout.
  • A fabric that is treatment-free and washable. UPPAbaby publishes flame-retardant-free, removable and machine washable fabrics on the MESA V2, and the same philosophy runs through its strollers.
  • A basket you can reach into and wipe out, rather than one stitched into the frame at three points.
  • An aluminum frame, which wipes clean and does not corrode the way an untreated steel one can. The Summer by Ingenuity 3Dlite and the Chicco Liteway both use one.
  • An organizer, so the things that leak — bottles, coffee, snack pots — are not sitting loose in the basket. The Skip Hop Grab & Go Ultra is the one we rank for exactly this.

16.9 lb with a 20 lb basket — heavier than a true travel stroller, and much better to push than one.

The Minu V2 sits between a travel stroller and a full-size one, and that middle is where a lot of families actually live. At 16.9 lb it is a few pounds heavier than a YOYO2, and in exchange the wheels are bigger, the ride is noticeably better on broken pavement, and the basket takes 20 lb, which is a real shopping trip rather than a token gesture. It folds to 12 by 20.25 by 23 in — compact, though not cabin-baggage small. The published range is 3 months to 50 lb, so a newborn needs a car seat adapter or the bassinet; that 3 month floor is the detail to check before buying it as a first stroller. Buy it if you want one stroller that handles everyday errands and occasional travel without being miserable at either.

What works

  • Rides far better than a true travel stroller
  • 20 lb basket is unusually useful for the size
  • Compact fold that still stands on its own

What to weigh

  • 3 month minimum — a newborn needs an adapter or bassinet
  • Not small enough for cabin baggage
  • Premium price for a secondary stroller

An aluminum frame at 13 lb with a four-position recline and a 50 lb limit, for a fraction of what the premium light strollers cost.

Most cheap umbrella strollers cannot recline, which makes them useless the moment a toddler falls asleep. The 3Dlite can, across four positions, and that single feature is why it is worth more than its price suggests. It takes a child to 50 lb and up to 43 in, the aluminum frame keeps it to 13 lb, and it has a 5-point harness and a storage basket that actually holds something. The compromises are the honest ones for the price: small hard wheels, a narrow canopy, and a fold that is quick but leaves a long floppy package rather than a neat one. As a second stroller for the trunk of the car, or the one that lives at grandparents', it is the right buy.

What works

  • Four-position recline at a price where most strollers have none
  • 13 lb aluminum frame
  • 50 lb limit is generous for the category

What to weigh

  • Small hard wheels
  • Narrow canopy
  • Folds long and floppy rather than compact

Six pockets and three insulated interior compartments that hold a real bottle — the organizer that actually replaces a changing bag on short trips.

Most stroller organizers are a shallow pouch that swallows one phone and tips forward. This one is sized to matter: six pockets, three insulated interior compartments that take large bottles and cups without them falling over, and side loops for keys and toys. That is enough to do a park trip without a separate bag, which is the only version of this product worth owning. It attaches with adjustable straps and fits most handlebars. Two honest caveats: any weight on the handlebar makes a light stroller more likely to tip backwards when you take the child out, so do not load it with shopping, and check it does not foul your stroller's fold before you commit.

What works

  • Big enough to replace a changing bag on short trips
  • Insulated compartments hold full-size bottles upright
  • Universal straps fit most handlebars

What to weigh

  • Weight on the handlebar makes a light stroller tip back more easily
  • Can interfere with some folds — check yours
  • Costs more than a basic pouch

If the stroller is beyond saving — frame corrosion, torn webbing, a seized fold — it is worth knowing that a replacement cheap umbrella stroller costs less than a professional clean, and that strollers do not have a legally mandated expiry date the way car seats do. The judgment is structural: a stroller with intact webbing, working brakes and a sound frame is fine to keep using.

Frequently asked questions

How do you clean a stroller?

Empty and vacuum it, remove and machine wash the seat cover if your manual allows, wipe the remaining fabric with mild soap and water followed by a clean-water pass, surface-clean the harness with soap and water only, clear hair from the wheel axles and re-lube them, then dry the whole thing open in the air before folding it away.

Can you put a stroller seat in the washing machine?

Only if the manufacturer says so, and only at the temperature they state. Many covers are removable and machine washable; some are spot-clean only, and a laminated or coated backing can be ruined by a machine cycle. Air dry rather than tumble dry in every case, because stroller fabric shrinks.

How do you get mold out of a stroller?

Take it outside, brush off the dry surface growth first, then clean with mild soap and water rather than bleach, and dry it completely in direct airflow. If the growth has reached the padding or the webbing, order replacement fabric from the manufacturer instead — a mold-affected harness should be replaced, never bleached.

Can you use bleach on a stroller?

No. Bleach and solvents damage stroller fabrics and can weaken harness webbing without any visible change, which is the dangerous part. Mild soap and water is the correct cleaner for every part of a stroller, including the frame.

How do you clean a stroller without taking it apart?

Vacuum thoroughly with a crevice tool first, then work the fabric in small sections with a cloth that is damp rather than wet, using mild soap and water, with a second pass of clean water to lift the residue. Avoid saturating the padding — it takes days to dry and that is how mold starts.

How often should I clean a stroller?

A quick vacuum and wipe every few weeks keeps it ahead of the problem, with a full clean at the end of each season or after any trip that involved sand, mud or a spill. The one that is not optional is drying it fully before it goes into storage.
