Strollers

The best strollers for big kids

Almost every stroller stops at 50 lb, so the weight limit is not what runs out. Seat-back height and legroom are, and almost nobody publishes them.

Our picks at a glance

The best stroller for a big kid is the UPPAbaby Vista V3, because the toddler seat runs to 50 lb with a tall seat back and genuine seat depth, and the frame does not feel overloaded with a five-year-old in it. If the child is tall rather than heavy and the walking is long, the Thule Urban Glide 3 is the better pick: 75 lb total capacity with a 49 lb maximum child weight, a long wheelbase that keeps your feet clear of the rear axle, and big wheels that make a heavy child feel lighter to push.

The honest finding of this page is that the specification you want mostly is not published. Weight limits cluster at 50 lb across the whole market, so they rarely decide anything. What actually ends a stroller's life for an older child is seat-back height, seat depth and the height limit where one exists — and most makers publish none of those. Where a figure exists we have used it; where it does not, we say so rather than inventing one.

What runs out first

Four things end a stroller for a bigger child, in roughly this order.

  1. 1.Seat-back height. When the child's shoulders are above the top of the seat back, the harness cannot sit correctly and the seat stops supporting them. This is usually the first thing to go and the least documented.
  2. 2.Seat depth and legroom. A deep seat lets a longer thigh sit properly instead of dangling with knees up. A shallow seat makes a five-year-old look wedged in because they are.
  3. 3.The published height limit, where there is one. Among our picks, the Summer 3Dlite states 43 in, which is a real number you can measure a child against. Most strollers give you pounds only.
  4. 4.Your own stride. A compact fold puts the rear axle close under the seat, so a tall adult kicks it. A long wheelbase fixes it — the same reasoning as best strollers for tall parents.

Note what is absent from that list: the weight limit. A 50 lb limit covers most children to around five or six, and almost every stroller worth buying reaches it. If a maker publishes 50 lb and nothing else, the number has told you very little.

One frame that carries one, two or three children, which is why it costs what it costs and why it is often still cheaper than buying twice.

The Vista's argument is arithmetic. The toddler seat takes a child to 50 lb, the RumbleSeat adds a second to 40 lb, and a PiggyBack board adds a third rider, so the frame you buy for a newborn is still the right frame after a second baby arrives. Against buying a single stroller now and a double later, the premium narrows a lot. It also includes a bassinet, which is the correct place for a newborn to lie flat on a long walk. It is not a small stroller: the frame with seat is 27.6 lb, the footprint is substantial in a small car trunk, and the whole system only makes sense if the expansion is actually in your plans. If you are certain you are having one child, the Cruz does most of this for less money and less bulk.

What works

  • Expands from one child to three on the same frame
  • Bassinet included, so a newborn can lie flat
  • 30 lb basket is the largest here

What to weigh

  • 27.6 lb and bulky folded
  • Only worth the price if you will actually use the expansion
  • Accessories to reach three children cost extra

26.2 lb with a compact fold — the jogging stroller that is still pleasant to live with when you are not running.

The BOB is the better trail stroller; the Urban Glide 3 is the better everyday one. It is 26.2 lb against the BOB's 28 lb, folds to 34.6 by 22.8 by 12.2 in, and handles beautifully on pavement and packed paths. The number to read carefully is the capacity: 75 lb total but a 49 lb maximum child weight, which is lower than the BOB's 75 lb per child and will end this stroller's useful life earlier for a tall kid. The cargo basket holds 15 lb with a zip-top cover, which is more usable than most. Choose it if your running is roads and park paths and the stroller also has to be your daily one; choose the BOB if the ground is genuinely rough.

What works

  • 26.2 lb and a genuinely compact fold for a jogger
  • Excellent on pavement and packed paths
  • Covered 15 lb cargo basket

What to weigh

  • 49 lb maximum child weight ends its life earlier than the BOB
  • Less capable than the BOB on rough trails
  • Premium price

50 lb per seat, all-wheel suspension and a one-step fold at 29.25 in wide — the side-by-side double that actually fits through a doorway.

The hard constraint on a side-by-side double is width, because a stroller that will not go through a shop door is a stroller you stop using. At 29.25 in open the City Mini GT2 Double clears standard doorways, and it carries 50 lb per seat for 100 lb total, which outlasts most doubles. The one-step fold is the feature parents rate highest in daily use: lift both in-seat straps and it folds itself, which is achievable with a child on your hip. Forever Air tires and all-wheel suspension handle broken pavement and gravel paths without needing a full jogging stroller. It is 34.7 lb, so lifting it into a trunk is a two-handed job, and both seats recline independently but neither lies fully flat, so newborn use needs a car seat or bassinet adapter. For twins or two close-in-age children, this is the default.

What works

  • 29.25 in clears standard doorways, unlike many side-by-sides
  • One-step fold you can do holding a child
  • 50 lb per seat outlasts most doubles

What to weigh

  • 34.7 lb to lift into a trunk
  • Neither seat lies fully flat, so a newborn needs an adapter
  • Takes up most of a small car's trunk folded

An aluminum frame at 13 lb with a four-position recline and a 50 lb limit, for a fraction of what the premium light strollers cost.

Most cheap umbrella strollers cannot recline, which makes them useless the moment a toddler falls asleep. The 3Dlite can, across four positions, and that single feature is why it is worth more than its price suggests. It takes a child to 50 lb and up to 43 in, the aluminum frame keeps it to 13 lb, and it has a 5-point harness and a storage basket that actually holds something. The compromises are the honest ones for the price: small hard wheels, a narrow canopy, and a fold that is quick but leaves a long floppy package rather than a neat one. As a second stroller for the trunk of the car, or the one that lives at grandparents', it is the right buy.

What works

  • Four-position recline at a price where most strollers have none
  • 13 lb aluminum frame
  • 50 lb limit is generous for the category

What to weigh

  • Small hard wheels
  • Narrow canopy
  • Folds long and floppy rather than compact

The published numbers, and the gaps

This table includes the blanks on purpose. An empty cell means the maker does not publish that figure, which is information rather than an oversight on our part.

Summer by Ingenuity 3Dlite50 lb43 in13 lbThe one pick with a stated height limit; cheap backup

The 43 in figure on the 3Dlite is worth dwelling on, because it is the kind of limit that arrives sooner than parents expect — plenty of five-year-olds are past 43 in while still well under 50 lb. That is the pattern across this category: height runs out before weight does. If your child is near the top of a growth chart, measure before you buy.

Safety and practical notes

Never use a stroller past its stated weight limit. An overloaded frame does not usually fail dramatically; it degrades — the fold latch stops seating cleanly, the wheels splay, the brake stops holding on a slope. All of those are worse with a heavier child in the seat. If your child is over the limit, the stroller is finished, and no amount of careful use changes that.

A bigger child can also climb in and out unaided, which makes the parking brake the most important feature on the stroller. Set it every time they get in or out, because a 45 lb child stepping onto the footrest of an unbraked stroller moves it. Keep the harness fastened on slopes and over curbs even when it feels unnecessary, and register the stroller so recall notices reach you — see CPSC recalls for how we treat recall status on this site. For the park-day version of this question, see best strollers for Disney World. And for the question underneath this one — whether a child this age should still be in a stroller at all — see what age to stop using a stroller.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best stroller for a big kid?

The UPPAbaby Vista V3 for most families: a 50 lb toddler seat with a tall seat back and real seat depth, on a frame that does not feel overloaded with a five-year-old in it. If the child is tall and the walking is long, the Thule Urban Glide 3 is better, with 75 lb total capacity, a 49 lb maximum child weight and a long wheelbase.

What is the weight limit on most strollers?

50 lb is the common figure across the market, and some joggers state a total capacity instead — the Thule Urban Glide 3 lists 75 lb total with a 49 lb maximum child weight. Because almost everything reaches 50 lb, the weight limit rarely separates good from bad for an older child.

How do I know when my child has outgrown the stroller?

Check three things: whether their shoulders sit above the top of the seat back, whether their knees are forced up because the seat is too shallow, and whether they exceed the published weight or height limit. The shoulders are usually the first to go, and it happens well before the weight limit for a tall child.

Is a 5 year old too old for a stroller?

No. A five-year-old who walks a mile happily at home will still run out on a multi-mile day in heat or at a theme park, and riding for part of it is normal. What matters is that the stroller is rated for their weight and height and that the seat still supports them properly.

Are there strollers for children over 50 lb?

Very few mainstream strollers go beyond 50 lb per seat; some doubles state a higher total figure, such as 100 lb across two seats, without raising the per-seat limit. For an older or larger child with ongoing mobility needs, the right category is adaptive equipment rather than a standard stroller, and that is a conversation to have with a pediatric provider.

What stroller is best for a tall child?

One with a deep seat and a tall seat back, and ideally a published height limit you can measure against. Among our picks only the Summer 3Dlite states one, at 43 in. For the others, sit the child in the seat and check that their shoulders are below the top of the seat back before buying.
